BSCA National Circuit Championship
Middlesbrough Circuit, North Yorkshire, June 19 2011
Report: Snowdon Sports
RIDERS from as far away as Jersey came to the North East for the British Schools Cycling Association National Circuit Race Championships, organised jointly by Cleveland Wheelers and Stockton Wheelers.
The first event was for the Over 16 and Under 16s.
From the gun Josh Teasdale (Team Jewson) and Harry Tanfield (Wallis Cycles) took control, with none of the other riders able to live with them in the 35-kilometre race.
They started lapping the other riders after about 10 kilometres, eventually gathering them all up with around five kilometres remaining.
With 800 metres left Josh put in an attack and crossed the line first, while Harry also won his category and Katie Howe came in as first girl.
The Under-14s race saw another Tanfield in action - this time it was Charlie Tanfield (Velo 29) who dominated events, attacking after just one kilometres in the 20km race, and the rest of the riders never saw him again.
With five kilometres left Sam Ross (Beacon Wheelers) left the bunch, while Charlie hung back on the last lap to avoid lapping the remains of the bunch to gain his victory. Eleanor Dickinson (Beacon Wheelers) was first girl.
The Under-12s race was a more tense affair with no riders breaking clear in the 10 kilometre race.
It came down to a bunch sprint, with Sophie Capewell (Lichfield CC) beating all the boys to win her title. Team-mate Harry Yates was the first boy.
The rain came down for the five-kilometre Under-10s race. Three riders broke away, Connor Eyeington (Cleveland Wheelers), David Lewis (North Midlands Youth) and Bradley Hill (Lyme RC), but it was David who came out on top with Connor second. Ella Lazenby from East Bradford CC was best of the girls.
And the last race of the day was the Under 8s, who covered three kilometres in very heavy rain. The race split from the start, and Matthew Egglestone (Beacon Wheelers) proved the strongest boy, while Libby Smith was best girl.
